EFCC Arrests Seven Suspected Internet Fraudsters in Uyo
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested seven suspected internet fraudsters in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital, in its renewed clampdown on cybercrime in the South-South region.
In a statement issued on Monday in Uyo, the Commission’s Head of Media and Publicity, Mr. Dele Oyewale, confirmed that the arrests followed actionable intelligence on the activities of the suspects.
“Operatives of the Commission’s Uyo Zonal Directorate arrested seven suspected internet fraudsters in a sting operation carried out in the early hours of the day at Uyeh Heaven and Ayam Estates, along Ring Road 3 in Uyo,” Oyewale stated.
According to him, preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects allegedly specialized in internet-related fraud, commonly referred to as “Yahoo Yahoo.” He noted that incriminating documents and electronic devices were recovered from the suspects during the operation.
Oyewale assured that the Commission remains committed to ridding the country of cybercriminals whose activities have dented Nigeria’s image internationally. He added that the suspects would be arraigned in court as soon as investigations are concluded.
The Uyo Zonal Office of the EFCC has, in recent months, intensified operations across Akwa Ibom and neighboring states, leading to several arrests and prosecutions of suspected internet fraudsters. The Commission has repeatedly warned youths against engaging in cybercrime, urging them to channel their creativity into legitimate ventures.
