Former President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, is dead.

The shocking development was confirmed on Sunday afternoon by his former spokesperson, Mallam Garba Shehu, through an official statement released to the media.

According to Shehu, the former president passed away peacefully at a private clinic in the United Kingdom, where he had reportedly been receiving medical attention.

“The family of the former president has announced the passing of Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a clinic in London,” Shehu stated. “May Allah accept him in Aljannatul Firdaus.”

Buhari, a retired Major General and former military Head of State from 1983 to 1985, returned to power as a civilian president in 2015 after winning the presidential election under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC). He was re-elected in 2019 and served two terms, completing his presidency in May 2023.

Born on December 17, 1942, in Daura, Katsina State, Buhari was a prominent figure in Nigerian politics for decades. Known for his anti-corruption stance and rigid discipline, he led a controversial administration often marked by economic challenges, insecurity, and a mixed legacy of reforms.

The cause of his death remains undisclosed at the time of filing this report. However, it is widely known that Buhari had frequently travelled to the United Kingdom for medical check-ups during his time in office.

His death marks the end of a significant chapter in Nigeria’s political history, with tributes already pouring in from political leaders, diplomats, traditional rulers, and citizens across the country and abroad.

The Presidency is expected to make an official announcement, while funeral arrangements and details about the burial are yet to be made public.

Buhari is survived by his wife, Aisha Buhari, children, grandchildren, and a legacy that will continue to generate debate among Nigerians for years to come.
