Intervention by Lawmakers Restores Calm After Youths Protest Incessant Cult Clashes in Igbogene
Normalcy returned to Igbogene community in Yenagoa Local Government Area of Bayelsa State following the intervention of lawmakers after youths staged a protest against the persistent cult-related violence and killings in the area.
The protesters had barricaded the busy Igbogene Junction, bringing traffic to a standstill as they expressed frustration over the growing insecurity and recurring cult clashes that have claimed lives and threatened the peace of the community.
The situation was brought under control following the timely intervention of the member representing Yenagoa/Kolokuma-Opokuma Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Oboku Oforji, and the member representing Yenagoa Constituency I in the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, Hon. (Chief) Ayibanegiyefa Egba.
The lawmakers, who were returning from an official engagement in Sampou, stopped at the protest venue to engage the aggrieved youths. During the interaction, they listened to the concerns of the protesters and assured them that steps were already being taken to draw the attention of the Bayelsa State Government and security agencies to the worsening security situation in the area.
They pledged to continue working with relevant authorities and community stakeholders to ensure lasting peace and enhanced security in Igbogene and its environs.
Convinced by the assurances and commitment demonstrated by the lawmakers, the youths agreed to call off the protest and removed the barricades, restoring the free flow of traffic and commercial activities.
Residents welcomed the intervention and expressed optimism that concrete measures would be taken to address the root causes of the violence and prevent further loss of lives in the community.
