CALABAR — A massive landslide triggered by heavy rainfall has severely damaged the Anansa Road at Diamond Hill in Calabar, Cross River State, raising fears that the route could be completely cut off if urgent intervention is not undertaken. �
The affected road serves as a critical access route to several federal institutions, including the Nigerian Navy Base and the Calabar Jetty. The collapse has disrupted traffic, with authorities partially closing the damaged section to heavy-duty vehicles as a precaution. �
During an inspection of the site, Cross River State Deputy Governor Peter Odey described the situation as a major environmental disaster, warning that continued erosion could isolate key government facilities and endanger nearby communities.
He directed the State Ministry of Works to begin emergency measures to stabilise the area while appealing to the Federal Government for urgent intervention through the Ecological Fund to prevent further destruction.
Residents expressed concern that persistent rainfall could worsen the situation, calling for immediate construction of permanent erosion-control structures to safeguard lives, property and critical infrastructure.
The latest incident adds to a series of landslides and flooding disasters that have affected parts of Calabar in recent weeks, including the tragedy that claimed five lives earlier this month. �
