A 40-year-old man identified simply as Felix, said to be from Cross River State, was found dead in a guest house along Azikoro Road in the Ekeki area of Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, following an alleged sexual encounter with an unidentified woman.
The incident reportedly occurred in the early hours of Wednesday at Diko Guest House, where the deceased was discovered naked in one of the rooms.
According to eyewitnesses, a cleaner at the guest house raised the alarm after finding the lifeless body while carrying out routine cleaning duties.
The woman who was allegedly with the deceased before the incident was nowhere to be found, and her identity remains unknown.
The death attracted a crowd of sympathisers, including traders and artisans at the nearby Seriake Dickson Shopping Complex, where Felix was well known as a mobile phone repair technician.
Witnesses said several sachets of alcoholic drinks were found on a bedside table in the room before the area was cordoned off by police officers.
Sources said three persons were initially taken into police custody in connection with the incident. They include the owner of Diko Guest House, the cleaner who discovered the body, and the deceased’s brother, Dennis.
However, Dennis was later released after explaining that he came into possession of Felix’s mobile phone after it was handed to him by a phone charging operator when efforts to locate his brother proved unsuccessful.
Dennis, who also works as a mobile phone repair technician at the Seriake Dickson Shopping Complex, said he was shocked by his brother’s sudden death.
Some traders at the shopping complex described the deceased as a familiar face in the area, while others recalled that he had previously been involved in a personal controversy that attracted public attention last year.
A water vendor at the market, who reacted to the incident, expressed shock over the death and advised men to avoid the use of unprescribed performance-enhancing substances before engaging in sexual activity.
As of the time of filing this report, the exact cause of Felix’s death had not been established. The police have commenced an investigation, while efforts are ongoing to identify and locate the woman who was reportedly last seen with the deceased.
