Oborevwori Approves N2m Grant, Monthly Stipends for Deltans Returning from South Africa After Xenophobic Attacks
ASABA – Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has approved a comprehensive welfare and reintegration package for Deltans who returned from South Africa following recent xenophobic attacks, announcing financial support aimed at helping the victims rebuild their lives.
The governor unveiled the intervention package during a reception held for the returnees at the Unity Hall, Government House, Asaba, on Friday. He was represented at the event by his Chief of Staff, Johnson Erijo.
As part of the package, Governor Oborevwori approved a one-time grant of N2 million for each affected family to assist them in restarting their livelihoods after losing businesses, jobs and personal belongings during the attacks.
In addition, every individual returnee will receive a monthly welfare stipend of N200,000, while each affected family will be paid N300,000 every month, beginning from August 2026 until May 29, 2027, when the governor’s first tenure expires.
Speaking through his representative, the governor strongly condemned the xenophobic attacks against Nigerians and other foreign nationals in South Africa, describing the violence as a grave violation of human dignity and fundamental human rights.
He expressed sympathy with the victims and their families, noting that no citizen should be subjected to violence, discrimination or persecution because of nationality or ethnic origin.
Governor Oborevwori assured the returnees that the Delta State Government would not abandon them in their time of need, stressing that the welfare package was designed to ease their immediate hardships and facilitate their successful reintegration into society.
According to him, beyond the financial support, the state government remains committed to creating opportunities that will enable the returnees to become economically self-reliant and contribute meaningfully to the development of Delta State.
He also urged the beneficiaries to make prudent use of the funds, invest in productive ventures and embrace available empowerment opportunities to secure a sustainable future for themselves and their families.
The governor further called on the Federal Government, the Nigerian High Commission in South Africa and relevant international bodies to continue engaging with South African authorities to prevent future incidents of xenophobic violence and ensure the protection of Nigerians living abroad.
The returnees, who expressed gratitude to the Delta State Government for the timely intervention, said the assistance would go a long way in helping them recover from the traumatic experiences they endured and rebuild their lives after returning home.
