The National Publicity Secretary of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Osa Director, has criticised the retirement benefits approved for former governors in Edo State during the administration of former governor Adams Oshiomhole.

Director made the remarks during an interview on Signature TV on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, while discussing the sacrifices made by former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, after leaving office.

The NDC spokesman, who described Edo State as his home state, said Oshiomhole, while leaving office, prepared what he described as “humongous” benefits for former governors.

He contrasted Oshiomhole’s action with that of former Edo State governor, Lucky Igbinedion, whom he described as having the pedigree of an “ultra-capitalist.”

According to Director, despite Igbinedion’s background as a businessman, the former governor did not make provisions for such huge retirement benefits for former governors in the state.

Director said the comparison was necessary to demonstrate how some politicians make decisions while in office that could personally benefit them after leaving government.

He, however, cited Peter Obi as an example of a former governor who, according to him, rejected certain benefits offered to him after his tenure as Anambra State governor.

“In my state, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, when he was leaving, prepared a humongous amount as benefits for ex-governors in a state like that. When even Chief Lucky Igbinedion, who has a pedigree of an ultra-capitalist, did not do that,” Director said.

He maintained that Obi’s decision to reject such benefits demonstrated a different approach to public service and personal sacrifice.
