The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has announced the recovery of a large cache of live ammunition and the arrest of a suspect linked to the consignment, alongside other individuals accused of obstructing lawful police duties.

The disclosure was made in a statement issued on Sunday by the Police Public Relations Officer of the command, DSP Timfon John.

According to the statement, the recovery was made on January 23, 2026, at about 11:00 p.m., when police operatives attached to the command were conducting routine stop-and-search operations along the Calabar–Itu Highway.

DSP John said the operatives intercepted a commercial bus with registration number ARR 600 ZY, which was en route to Calabar from Akwa Ibom State.

“During a thorough search of the vehicle, a carton containing Four Hundred and Fifteen (415) live cartridges was recovered. The vehicle was driven by one Ikenna, with passengers on board,” the statement read.

“Suspects linked to the ammunition, as well as others who attempted to obstruct lawful police duties, have been arrested. Investigations are ongoing to ascertain the source and intended destination of the ammunition, as well as to identify other members of the syndicate,” DSP John stated.

The command reassured residents of Akwa Ibom State of its commitment to combating crime and preventing the proliferation of illegal arms and ammunition.

DSP John warned criminal elements to desist from illegal activities, stressing that the police would continue to intensify patrols, stop-and-search operations, and intelligence-led policing across the state.
