Rising Child Theft Cases Spark Concern in Bayelsa, Parents Urged to Be Vigilant
Growing incidents of child theft in Bayelsa State have heightened fears among residents, with civil society organizations and gender advocacy groups calling on parents and guardians to take extra precautions to safeguard their children.
The latest reported case occurred in the Okutukutu area of Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital. Residents say the incident has further fueled concerns over the safety of children in the state, following similar cases previously reported in the Akenfa area and other parts of Yenagoa.
Concerned stakeholders have described the trend as alarming and urged security agencies to intensify efforts to investigate the incidents, apprehend those responsible, and prevent further occurrences.
When contacted for comments on the recent cases, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Bayelsa State Police Command, Musa Mohammed, said he would get back to our correspondent but had yet to provide an official response as of the time of filing this report.
Meanwhile, civil society groups and gender rights advocates have appealed to parents, schools, and community leaders to remain vigilant and closely monitor children, especially in public places and during school activities.
They also called for increased community surveillance and cooperation with law enforcement agencies, stressing that timely reporting of suspicious movements and individuals could help curb the growing menace.
Residents have expressed hope that security agencies will take decisive action to address the situation and restore confidence in the safety of children across the state.
