The Executive Chairman of Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, Hon. Target Segibo, has appealed to leaders and residents of Eniwari and Opuama communities to exercise restraint and avoid actions capable of escalating tensions following the death of a youth, Thomas Ogbianawei, during a violent clash that erupted after a friendly football match between the two communities.

Hon. Segibo made the appeal in a press statement issued on Sunday through his Press Secretary, Mr. Ayibatari Easterday, amid growing concerns over the security situation in the affected area.

The chairman expressed sadness over the unfortunate incident and extended his condolences to the family of the deceased and the people of Eniwari Community. He urged community leaders, youth groups, and other stakeholders to caution their followers against reprisals and allow security agencies to carry out their investigations without interference.

According to the statement, security agencies have already taken control of the situation and are working to identify and apprehend those responsible for the violence that led to the death of the young man.

“The security agencies are on top of the situation, and government will ensure that all those involved in the dastardly act are brought to justice. We appeal to all residents to remain calm and cooperate with security personnel as investigations continue,” the chairman stated.

Hon. Segibo emphasized that his administration would not tolerate any form of lawlessness or breakdown of peace in any part of Southern Ijaw Local Government Area. He warned against retaliatory attacks, stressing that such actions could further aggravate the crisis and undermine ongoing efforts to restore peace.

The council chairman further called on traditional rulers, community development committees, youth leaders, women groups, and religious leaders in both Eniwari and Opuama communities to intensify peace-building efforts and promote dialogue among the youths.

He reaffirmed the commitment of the local government to maintaining law and order and ensuring the safety of lives and property across the council area.

The incident reportedly began during a friendly football match involving teams from Eniwari and Opuama communities on Saturday. What started as a disagreement among players allegedly degenerated into a violent confrontation involving youths from both communities. In the aftermath of the clash, Thomas Ogbianawei was reportedly attacked, leading to his death and sparking tension within the area.

As of the time of filing this report, security operatives had intensified surveillance in the affected communities to forestall any further breakdown of law and order, while investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident continued.
