A National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member serving in Nembe Local Government Area of Bayelsa State has been found dead after he was earlier declared missing, throwing the corps community into mourning.
The deceased, identified as Okebaram Stanley Chimaroke, a 27-year-old Civil Engineering graduate and former Students’ Union Government President of the Federal Polytechnic Nekede, Imo State, was reportedly serving in the riverine Nembe Creek area before his disappearance.
Sources said Chimaroke was last seen on the evening of July 24, after which repeated efforts by colleagues and NYSC officials to reach him on his mobile phone proved unsuccessful. The matter was subsequently reported to the police by fellow corps members, prompting a search operation in the creek community.
His lifeless body was later recovered from a body of water in Nembe under circumstances that remain unclear. While some reports alleged that the corps member may have been attacked by unidentified assailants before his death, security authorities have yet to officially confirm the cause of death or the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident.
The Bayelsa State Police Command had earlier deployed operatives to the area following the missing person’s report. Investigations are ongoing to determine what led to the young corps member’s death.
The incident has sparked grief among fellow corps members, friends and associates, many of whom have taken to social media to mourn Chimaroke, describing him as a promising and vibrant young leader whose life was cut short in tragic circumstances.
As of the time of filing this report, neither the NYSC management nor the Bayelsa State Police Command had released a detailed official statement on the recovery of the body or the outcome of preliminary investigations.
Residents and stakeholders have called on security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident and ensure that anyone found culpable is brought to justice.
