A 29-year-old man, identified as Ebikeme Seiye, has been arrested over the alleged rape of a five-year-old girl, Oyeintari Idonwanbofa, in Akede Community, Sagbama Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.
The suspect and the alleged victim are both said to be residents of Akede Community.
The incident was reported on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, by the girl’s elder cousin, Mr Tobokeakpo Selekeme, who brought the matter to the attention of the authorities following the alleged incident.
According to information made available to our correspondent, the suspect was subsequently arrested by personnel of the Bayelsa State Community Safety Corps, Amassoma Cluster, on Wednesday.
The arrest reportedly followed information received about the alleged incident involving the five-year-old girl.
During questioning, Seiye reportedly admitted to having sexual intercourse with the child. He allegedly attributed his action to the influence of hard drugs, locally referred to as “Kolos.”
The allegation has generated concern within the community, particularly because the suspect and the child are reportedly from the same community.
The circumstances surrounding the incident are expected to be further investigated by the appropriate authorities to establish the full facts of the case and ensure that the rights and welfare of the child are protected.
The alleged victim, being a minor, is expected to receive appropriate medical, psychological and protective support while investigations continue.
The suspect remains in the custody of the relevant authorities pending further investigation and possible prosecution in accordance with the law.
Residents of Akede Community and other members of the public are expected to cooperate with the authorities by providing any information that may assist in establishing the circumstances surrounding the alleged offence.
