PDP Knocks Bayelsa at 30, Decries Uncompleted Tower Hotel Project,lavish celebrations by Diri’s government
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Bayelsa State chapter, has criticised the state government over what it described as a lavish celebration of Bayelsa’s 30th anniversary amid widespread hunger, poverty and unemployment among residents.
The party, in a statement issued by its State Publicity Secretary, Hon. Ikaebimo Mark, on Wednesday, said the elaborate anniversary festivities were insensitive to the economic difficulties confronting ordinary Bayelsans.
Mark said the Bayelsa Tower Hotel project, which has remained uncompleted in the heart of Yenagoa for 22 years despite the enormous public resources committed to it, had become a symbol of abandoned government projects and misplaced priorities in the state.
According to him, the continued neglect of the Tower Hotel and other abandoned projects, while public funds are being committed to anniversary celebrations, raises concerns about the priorities of the state government.
He said Bayelsa at 30 deserved more than “pomp and pageantry,” arguing that the state needed accountability, completed projects, employment opportunities and policies that would directly improve the welfare of its citizens.
The PDP therefore urged the state government to reflect on the prevailing economic conditions of Bayelsans and redirect public resources and attention towards addressing the pressing needs of the people.
Mark said the anniversary should provide an opportunity for the government to take stock of the state’s development and prioritise projects and programmes capable of improving the lives of its citizens.
