YENAGOA — Eight days after Bayelsa-based social media content creator, Imomotimi Johnguy, popularly known as “James Brain Box,” was reportedly taken into custody, questions are mounting over the circumstances of his detention and the allegations against him.

The continued detention of Brain Box has generated concern among content creators, activists and other residents of Bayelsa State, with calls growing for the authorities to either charge him before a court or release him if no charge can be sustained.

Brain Box is reportedly being held at the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Yenagoa), following comments contained in two social-media videos.

However, as of the time of filing this report, there has been no official statement from the Bayelsa State Police Command, the Department of State Services (DSS), or the Bayelsa State Government explaining the circumstances of his reported arrest and continued detention.

One of the videos reportedly centred on federal allocations to Bayelsa State.

Brain Box allegedly mentioned a figure of about ₦79 billion, questioning how much of the money was being expended on salaries and how much was going into infrastructure and other development projects.

He reportedly raised questions about the level of infrastructure in the state and made critical comments about politicians and the management of public resources.

The comments have reportedly formed part of the issues surrounding his detention.

But questions remain as to what specific offence the content creator is alleged to have committed and under which law.

In another video, Brain Box reportedly called on Nigerians to seek the release of records concerning President Bola Ahmed Tinubu from the FBI platform.

He reportedly urged Nigerians to continue demanding answers if the records were not released.

Authorities are reportedly said to have taken exception to the contents of the videos, with allegations including incitement, misinformation and other offences.

However, Niger Delta Herald has not independently established the precise charges against Brain Box or the evidence being relied upon by the authorities.

There are also unanswered questions concerning the circumstances surrounding his reported arrest.

Earlier reports circulating on social media claimed that Brain Box was picked up around Igbogini, Yenagoa, by persons believed to be DSS operatives.

There were also claims that he was allegedly blindfolded.

Niger Delta Herald has not independently verified those claims.

It is also unclear whether the DSS carried out the arrest or whether other security agencies were involved.

The passage of eight days without a detailed public explanation has heightened concerns among his supporters.
Among the questions being asked are:
What exactly are the charges against Brain Box?
Which security agency arrested him?
Where was he arrested?
Has he been arraigned before a court?
Why has he remained in custody for eight days?
What evidence is being relied upon against him?
And why have the Police, DSS and Bayelsa State Government not publicly addressed the matter?

Those calling for Brain Box’s release say that if he has committed an offence, he should be charged in accordance with the law and given the opportunity to defend himself.

They also insist that if the allegations cannot be sustained, he should be released.

The controversy has therefore moved beyond the content of the videos to questions about due process, freedom of expression and the responsibility of security agencies to provide information when a citizen is held in custody.

Governor Douye Diri is also being urged by concerned Bayelsans to ensure that the matter is handled within the confines of the law.

For now, however, the silence from the relevant authorities has left the public with more questions than answers.

Niger Delta Herald will continue to monitor the development and seek responses from the Bayelsa State Police Command, DSS and the State Government on the circumstances surrounding Brain Box’s reported detention.

Eight days on, the big question remains: Where is Brain Box, and why is he still in detention?
