Senior citizens in Akwa Ibom State have pledged their unwavering support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and Governor Umo Eno in the 2027 general elections, citing their contributions to the welfare of the elderly and overall development of the state.

The declaration was made during the Akwa Ibom Senior Citizens Grand Rally of Endorsement held at the Senator Oluremi Tinubu Senior Citizens Centre in Ikono Local Government Area.

Speaking at the event, the National President of Akwa Ibom Senior Citizens, Obong Barrister Emmanuel Archibong, said the group was impressed by the performance of the three leaders and believed they deserved another term in office.

According to him, the endorsement was not a mere political gesture but a firm commitment based on the achievements recorded by the leaders in improving the welfare of citizens, particularly senior citizens.

Archibong commended Governor Umo Eno for the payment of pension and gratuity arrears, the provision of medical support for the elderly, and the implementation of various social welfare programmes targeted at senior citizens.

He described the establishment of Compassionate Homes and the introduction of medical insurance for elderly persons as landmark initiatives that demonstrated the governor’s commitment to the wellbeing of senior citizens.

The senior citizens’ leader also appealed to the state government to provide buses for the association across the three senatorial districts to facilitate its activities. He further requested the appointment of liaison officers or personal assistants to represent the interests of senior citizens in government.

Other speakers at the rally, including the Coordinator of Akwa Ibom Senior Citizens in Ikono Local Government Area, Chief Christopher Samuel Inyang; Chairman of the Ikono Chapter, Elder Emmanuel Ebong; Coordinator of Itak, Obong Gregory Anthony Udo; and senior stakeholder in Ikono LGA, Obong Aniekan James Inwang, lauded Governor Umo Eno for recognizing and supporting senior citizens in the state.

They urged local government chairmen to emulate the governor’s example by carrying senior citizens along in governance and addressing the challenges facing elderly people at the grassroots level.

The speakers acknowledged the economic hardships currently being experienced by many elderly citizens but expressed confidence that the government would continue to implement policies and programmes aimed at improving their welfare.

Reaffirming their political stance, the senior citizens vowed not to compromise their votes in the 2027 elections, pledging massive support for President Tinubu, Senate President Akpabio, and Governor Umo Eno.

They particularly praised Governor Umo Eno for his commitment to the payment of pensions and gratuities, the provision of medical insurance for the elderly, the establishment of Compassionate Homes, and the distribution of drugs and other forms of assistance to vulnerable senior citizens.

According to them, such initiatives have demonstrated that the government genuinely cares for its elderly population and deserve continued support.

The group expressed optimism that the government would sustain and expand its welfare programmes for senior citizens despite prevailing economic challenges.
