A middle-aged man has lost his life in a tragic hit-and-run accident that occurred on Monday at the Biogbolo area of Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital.
The fatal incident reportedly occurred when a driver, said to be travelling at high speed, knocked down the victim along a busy section of the road, causing panic among residents and road users in the area.
Eyewitnesses alleged that the driver was making a phone call while driving before losing concentration and crashing into the victim. According to witnesses, the impact of the collision was severe, throwing the victim into the air before he landed headfirst on the tarred road.
The victim was said to have sustained fatal injuries and died instantly at the scene before medical assistance could arrive.
Residents who witnessed the incident expressed concern over the increasing cases of reckless driving and the use of mobile phones by motorists while driving, describing the development as a major threat to public safety.
Although details surrounding the victim’s identity were still sketchy as of press time, unconfirmed reports indicated that his remains had been deposited in a morgue in Yenagoa.
Sources also disclosed that the driver involved in the accident has been arrested, though authorities were yet to officially confirm the development.
As of the time of filing this report, neither the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) nor the Bayelsa State Police Command had issued an official statement regarding the incident.
