Politicians Hijack Funds Meant for Cooperative Societies, Akwa Ibom Cooperative Leader Alleges
By Christopher Tom, Uyo
The President of Eastern Obolo One Mind Cooperative Society has called on the Akwa Ibom State Government to establish a transparent mechanism for disbursing funds meant for cooperative societies, alleging that such funds are often diverted by politicians instead of reaching the intended beneficiaries.
The cooperative leader made the appeal while speaking with journalists during the 2026 International Day of Cooperatives celebration in Uyo.
He alleged that politicians frequently hijack intervention funds earmarked for cooperative societies, leaving genuine members with little or no support to expand their businesses.
According to him, the government should channel financial assistance directly through the leadership of registered cooperative societies, who are familiar with their members and can ensure that the funds are distributed fairly.
He maintained that allowing politicians and non-members to benefit from cooperative intervention programmes undermines the purpose of the initiative and should be discouraged.
The cooperative president said the alleged diversion of funds has negatively affected many members, forcing some into debt and causing a decline in their businesses, with the attendant hardship on their families.
He expressed confidence that Governor Umo Eno’s ARISE Agenda is designed to improve the welfare of cooperative societies and promote entrepreneurship across the state.
He appealed to the governor to ensure that future financial interventions are delivered directly to genuine cooperative societies to prevent political interference and guarantee that the intended beneficiaries receive the support.
The cooperative leader also commended Governor Eno for his commitment to the development of Akwa Ibom State despite prevailing challenges, particularly in the areas of tourism, agriculture, and education.
He thanked members of various cooperative societies for their massive turnout at the International Day of Cooperatives celebration, describing their participation as a demonstration of their commitment to the cooperative movement.
He assured the government that cooperative societies would make prudent use of any financial support provided to them to expand their businesses, create jobs, and contribute to the socio-economic development of the state.
