The Proprietor of Treasure Jireh Group of Schools, Mr. Izibeya Sorgwe, has formally retracted his earlier publication in which he alleged that he was being threatened by a police officer, ASP Ekeh, saying the statement was made based on a misunderstanding of the officer’s message.
In a statement made available to the media, Sorgwe explained that upon further reflection, he realized that the communication from ASP Ekeh did not amount to a threat as he had initially perceived.
He expressed deep regret over the publication and offered an unreserved apology to the police officer, appealing that the report should not be misconstrued as an act of defamation or an attempt to tarnish the officer’s reputation.
“I sincerely withdraw my earlier publication in its entirety. I have now come to understand that the message from ASP Ekeh was not intended as a threat. I regret the misunderstanding and any embarrassment or inconvenience my publication may have caused,” he stated.
Sorgwe further appealed to ASP Ekeh to accept his apology in good faith, stressing that there was never any intention to malign his character or undermine the integrity of the Nigeria Police Force.
He also clarified that the Niger Delta Herald, which carried the publication, merely published his statement in line with standard journalistic practice and should not be held responsible for the views expressed.
According to him, the newspaper acted professionally by publishing information supplied by him and should therefore be completely exonerated from any liability arising from the publication.
Sorgwe reaffirmed his respect for the Nigeria Police Force and its officers, expressing hope that the matter would be resolved amicably and that cordial relations would be maintained going forward.
