The Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, has announced his withdrawal from the All Progressives Congress (APC) gubernatorial primaries ahead of the forthcoming governorship election in the state.

In a press statement issued on Wednesday, Governor Fubara said the decision followed “deep reflection and extensive consultations” with his family, friends, and political associates.

He stated that although the decision was difficult, it became necessary in the interest of peace, stability, and unity in the state.

According to him, leadership requires sacrifice, stressing that personal ambition must sometimes give way to the collective interest of the people.

“Rivers State is bigger than any individual, and at this critical moment, the peace, stability, and unity of our dear state must take precedence over every personal interest,” he said.

Governor Fubara expressed appreciation to his supporters for their loyalty, sacrifices, prayers, and commitment throughout his political consultations, acknowledging that many of them might feel disappointed by his decision.

He noted that his silence in recent weeks was deliberate and guided by the higher interest of the state.

Drawing from a traditional proverb, the governor stated that “not everything a hunter sees in the forest is spoken of in the marketplace,” suggesting that he had faced enormous pressures and difficult political choices.

Fubara, however, maintained that his withdrawal should not be interpreted as an act of weakness or surrender, insisting that the decision was borne out of conviction and sacrifice for the greater good of the state.

The governor also thanked the ruling All Progressives Congress for the platform extended to him during the process and expressed gratitude to Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his support and encouragement.

He urged members and supporters of the APC to remain united and committed to the party as it prepares for the governorship election.

Fubara reaffirmed his commitment to continue serving the people of Rivers State until the completion of his tenure.
The statement was dated May 20, 2026.
